Understanding ABA

What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for autism spectrum disorder — endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the U.S. Surgeon General, and the National Institute of Mental Health.

The Science Behind ABA

Applied Behavior Analysis is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. ABA therapy helps children with autism understand how behavior works, how behavior is affected by the environment, and how learning takes place.

ABA therapy applies our understanding of how behavior works to real situations. The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful or affect learning. ABA therapy programs can help children with autism learn new skills and apply them to real-life situations.

A qualified and trained behavior analyst (BCBA) designs and directly oversees the program. They customize ABA programs to each learner's skills, needs, interests, preferences, and family situation.

Common Questions

ABA Therapy FAQs

How many hours of ABA therapy does my child need?

The recommended intensity varies by child. Most children benefit from 10–40 hours per week depending on their age, diagnosis, and goals. Your BCBA will recommend an appropriate schedule after a thorough assessment.

At what age should ABA therapy start?

Early intervention (ages 2–5) produces the strongest outcomes, but ABA therapy is effective at any age. We work with children, teens, and young adults across the spectrum.

Is ABA therapy covered by insurance?

Yes — most major insurance plans are required by Texas law to cover ABA therapy for autism. We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Medicaid/STAR Kids, and many more.

What does a typical ABA session look like?

Sessions are structured but fun — a mix of play-based activities, skill-building exercises, and natural environment teaching. Your child will work one-on-one with a trained therapist under the supervision of a BCBA.

How do I know if ABA is working?

We track data on every skill target during every session. You receive regular progress reports and parent training so you can see measurable growth and reinforce skills at home.

Will ABA therapy change my child's personality?

Absolutely not. ABA is designed to help your child communicate, connect, and thrive — while celebrating who they are. We never try to make autistic children "less autistic." We help them build skills that increase independence and quality of life.
