From ABA Therapy to School: Tips for a Successful Transition

Transitioning from intensive ABA therapy to a school setting is a major milestone. Here's how to prepare your child, navigate the IEP process, and maintain the progress you've worked so hard to achieve.

Before School Starts

  • Request an evaluation for special education services at least 6 months before enrollment
  • Visit the school with your child during quiet hours
  • Share your child's ABA data and progress reports with the school team
  • Discuss which ABA strategies should continue in the classroom

The IEP Process

Your child may qualify for an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Here's how to navigate it effectively:

  • Attend the ARD/IEP meeting prepared with your child's current skill levels, BCBA recommendations, and goals
  • Request ABA-trained support staff if available
  • Include specific, measurable goals that mirror therapy targets

Easing the Transition

  • Practice the school routine at home weeks before (wake time, getting dressed, packing backpack)
  • Visit the classroom, meet the teacher, and walk the hallways
  • Create a visual schedule for the school day
  • Start with half days if possible

Maintaining Progress

  • Keep ABA therapy alongside school if possible (after school or weekends)
  • Maintain regular communication between your BCBA and the school team
  • Consistency across environments is key to generalization
