How to Prepare Your Child for Their First ABA Session

Starting ABA therapy is an exciting step for your family. The first session sets the tone for your child's entire therapy experience, and a little preparation goes a long way. Here is how to make it smooth:

  • 1Talk to your child about the new person coming to play and learn with them.
  • 2Keep the environment comfortable — sessions often happen at home where your child feels safe.
  • 3Have favorite toys and snacks available.
  • 4Share your child's likes, dislikes, and triggers with the therapist beforehand.
  • 5Know that the first few sessions focus on building rapport — the therapist will spend time getting to know your child through play.
  • 6Be patient — it's normal for children to need adjustment time.

What the First Session Looks Like

Your BCBA will guide you through every step. The first few sessions are primarily about building a warm, trusting relationship with your child. Do not be surprised if it looks more like play than therapy — that is intentional and exactly how it should be.

Your Role as a Parent

Your involvement is one of the most powerful predictors of your child's success. Stay nearby, observe when possible, and ask your BCBA questions. The more you understand the strategies being used, the more you can reinforce them throughout the day.
